“Information on Grandma Ashley.
Dear viewers and supporters, Ashley is a much-loved female pigtail monkey that has lived at Bayon temple for many years. Ashley used to be a member of Amari troop and today spends her time with monkeys from both Amber and Savanna groups.
Ashley has helped to care for many younger monkeys over the years including her adopted daughter Amanda. Unfortunately, Ashley has never successfully given birth to a child of her own since living at Bayon temple.
Last year Ashley was pregnant for the first time in many years. Sadly, she gave birth to a stillborn baby on October 11, 2023. This year Ashley appeared to be pregnant again. The WCPO staff has been monitoring her health and condition for the last three to four months. Yesterday on Sunday, September 29, 2024 the WCPO team was alerted that Ashley was possibly in labor and appeared to be struggling to give birth.
Our team quickly responded to Ashley’s location. Our assessment showed that Ashley appeared to be in distress and had some bleeding. In consultation with our experienced veterinarian the team determined it was best to bring Ashley to our center. We got permission from the authorities to proceed with our plan to help Ashley.
Late yesterday afternoon we successfully brought Ashley to our center. Ashley got a quick medical check and was stable. She was hungry and enjoyed her meal and slept comfortably during the night with medical staff checking on her frequently.
This morning the veterinarian and medical staff gave Ashley a thorough examination including ultrasound and X-rays. The medical staff determined that Ashley had been pregnant but there was no longer a baby on either the ultrasound or the X-rays. She did have some bleeding and appeared to have had a miscarriage although the baby was not found.
Ashley is in stable condition but needs to stay at our center while she receives medication and recovers physically. Our team had hoped to help Ashley safely deliver her own baby. Sadly, this wasn’t possible. Our team will continue to provide Ashley with needed medication and medical and supportive care so she can safely return to her family, friends, and troop.
Our mission to provide assistance and save lives is sometimes challenging. But we are committed to continue providing care and assistance to monkeys who need our help. Thanks to your support, we were able to give our beloved Ashley the care she needed.
We’re grateful for your trust and support
